Glutathione Reductase (GSR)¶
The GSR gene encodes glutathione reductase, a core enzyme for maintaining cellular antioxidant defence. The latest research in racing pigeons (Kulig 2025) reports that its polymorphism is associated with racing performance. This page covers its function, the evidence and the limits of interpretation.
Plain-language analogy¶
High-intensity flight produces large amounts of "metabolic exhaust" (oxidation products). GSR is like the "recycling station manager" inside the cell: it recharges spent antioxidant molecules (glutathione) back into a usable state, so the cell can keep clearing the exhaust. Differences in the manager's efficiency may affect recovery capacity after high-intensity flight.
What GSR is¶
The GSR (Glutathione Reductase) gene encodes glutathione reductase, which catalyses the reduction of oxidised glutathione (GSSG) to reduced glutathione (GSH), maintaining the reduced state of glutathione within the cell.
Biological function¶
- It maintains the GSH/GSSG ratio and is a core part of antioxidant defence;
- It takes part in scavenging reactive oxygen species and in redox balance;
- It is associated with recovery from oxidative stress after exercise.
Role in racing pigeons¶
Racing flight at high intensity is accompanied by rising oxidative stress, and the efficiency of the antioxidant system may affect flight performance and post-race recovery. As a core antioxidant enzyme gene, GSR has been included in studies of racing performance in pigeons.
Research evidence (evidence grade B)¶
- Kulig et al. (2025, International Journal of Biological Macromolecules): studied the structural impact of GSR and LRP8 gene polymorphisms on protein function and their relationship with racing performance in pigeons. PMID: 40246119 | DOI: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2025.143181
Evidence grade definition: B = racing-pigeon-specific, peer-reviewed journal research reporting a statistically significant association.
Genetic variation and markers¶
The research focuses on polymorphic sites in the GSR gene and their potential impact on protein structure and function. Genotyping interpretation should be confined to the trait definitions of the original study.
Scientific limitations¶
- Association ≠ causation;
- A new 2025 study; independent replication has yet to accumulate;
- Oxidative stress levels are influenced by training load and nutritional status.
Genetic testing and breeding applications¶
The GSR genotype can serve as reference information for a candidate locus related to antioxidant defence and recovery, and is best used together with race results and multi-gene information.
Frequently asked questions¶
Is GSR a "recovery gene"?
The current evidence is an association with racing performance; it cannot yet be defined as a "recovery gene".
Can testing for GSR predict performance?
No. A genotype is probabilistic reference information.
Is antioxidant status influenced by environment?
Yes. Training, nutrition and health status all affect the redox balance.
